Steffen Volmer, born 1955 in Dresden, was during the eighties a member of the legendary group of artists called Clara Mosch, participating on the Pleinairs (happenings), meetings and exhibitions of the group. His visual and literate double talent is obvious in his original graphic books, published since 1981.
The human figure is always the center of the works by Steffen Volmer, at the same time individual and archaic, a symbol of mankind. His existential questions touch the mystic meaning, the idea of unity and harmony. Also the titles of his paintings, such as "Bewegt" (moved), "Eingebunden" (involved), "SCHUTZ" (protection), express the human experience that is timeless and intercultural. The conflict between heart and head, emotion and reason, that is typical of modern society, will be explored again and again.
The very special transparency of the works by Steffen Volmer is the result of different layers of tissue paper, overlapped on cardboard, deckle-edged paper or canvas. Besides the conventional techniques as crayon, ink, watercolor and acrylic he also uses manuscript ink, latex, cigar ashes and tea. In his new works, Volmer even increases the transparency by using acrylic fiber sheets. Thus he overcomes the two dimensions by extending into the space.
