Julio Gonzalez
- Dead: 1942
Julio Gonzalez
Julio González is one of the classics amongst the sculptors of the 20th century. And yet only in the last two decades was he able to emerge from the shadow of the legendary Picasso and reach the consciousness of a wider public. As a sculptor, he pioneered a technique of working directly with metal in the 1930s and is particularly known for his abstract forged and welded open-form constructions in iron, bronze and silver. For him, this technique increasingly replaced the old methods of joining metal parts. Iron, being brittle and difficult to form, opened up a completely different visual language to him.

González began to develop this idea of sculpture- as a transparent construction in space- in the late 1920's.

Since 1928, he also uses his drawings as preliminary sketch for the sculptures, at first made with pencil, and then defining their contours with the use of black watercolours and a pen. His drawings allow a differentiated view on his way of working. In his extensive graphic oeuvre, he circled around ideas for sculptures and examined the idea of construction in space. Though these drawings were used as inspiration for his sculptures, they all have their own character, and mostly his latest drawings show us that Gonzalez was a visionary that had a direct implication on the development of the sculpture in the post-war period.

He made a significant contribution to the ‘truth to materials’ discourse of his time and was an important example for David Smith as well as Anthony Caro, Eduardo Chillida and other sculptors working with welded metal after World War II.

Although he incorporated both Surrealist and Constructivist elements in his work, González was independent of any movement

He passed away in 1942.
