Michael Morgner

Michael Morgner
Michael Morgner, former East German "Non-Conformist" and one of the leaders of the Clara Mosch group, had several museum exhibitions and also is presented in the important collections in North and South America, Germany and other countries. The graphic and symbolic force of his work gained him a special reputation within the context of the GRD and beyond. His paintings are strong interpretations of the conflict between art, the individual and society. They tell us of the individual's fight for freedom, hindered by colossal external barriers, they show us mankind's exertions in the face of failure, but also the human being in a state of victory, breaking free of his chains.

His expressive works strive for simplification and reduction of the signal and figurative elements. Compositional and symbolic energies result from the pure forms of cross, bar and triangle. The Christian symbolism builds his alphabet, his artistic stock of signs, used to transmit his existential messages of fear, death and hope. On top of this, there is a personal experience of disease and death, that brakes through in several groups of works. His series deal with the symbolic figures "Fear", "Strider", and variations of "Ecce Homo". The "Big Strider", appearing since 1980 in his work, may be understood as Alter Ego, fighting with his physical energy against passivity. In the cycles "German Requiem" and "Jewish Requiem" Morgner analyzes the persecution and extermination of dissenter and religious foreigners during the German dictatorships.

Morgner prefers to work on paper. Often he places different papers next to each other and mounts them on bigger canvases. The most important manipulations are relief printings, washings (Lavages) and splittings. Since the nineties he attacks the surface more and more. He destroys the skin of the works by tearing off scraps of paper. This technical process refers to injury and scarring. Besides black ink he uses asphalt varnish and corresponding water and turpentine as solvents. Single paper works with serial used figurative signs are often treated with different drawings.

In 1995, Morgner makes the first sculptural studies dealing with the subject "Fear". One year later he develops his first huge steel sculpture called "Reliquie Mensch". Steel is his preferred material for sculptures: the technological temper is corresponding with elemental monochromie. The natural weather-induced changes are material immanent metaphors for relativity and transitoriness.
