Julio Rondo

Birthday: 1952 in Sotrondio
Julio Rondo
Julio Rondo, born 1952 in Sotrondio, Spain, immigrated at the age of ten years with his parents to Germany. Since 1989, he teaches at the Merz Academie in Stuttgart, where he lives since his studies, only interrupted by one-year foreign studies in the United States.

The clearness and composure of the works by Julio Rondo is emerging from the formal architectural composition that is related to architectural rooms. His preferred technique is acrylic glass painting, a technique that does not allow corrections and therefore needs a very precise way of working. Monochrome and semitransparent color fields are partially clear divided and partially over lied.

At first glance, the works by Julio Rondo seem to be abstract, but they revolve around the topics space and time, feed by the fountain of memory. Rondos interest is not primarily directed to the formal balance of the geometric color fields, as it is in concrete art. Even his titles suggest a social relevance: they deal with rooms, fixtures and human relations. The memory as a deeply subjective activity plays the primal role. It is subjective because of the fact that Rondo builds neither a chronological nor a formal system of events, but insists in the perspective character of the memory. The artist builds his personal interpretation of the past by combining individual observations, feelings and associations.

The exhibition "Meta Memory III" shows new works, treating landscape as place of memory. The artistic place is a Meta place, existing as a real location only through the title of the work. The real place is modified and defined by painting, build through the memory and narrating about the memory as such. The works, appearing formal at first glace, are indeed very substantial. In addition, they are a critical reflection about the elemental human ability to think and to remember.
